Larry Moss

LARRY MOSS (Director) studied his craft with Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner and Warren Robertson. He began his career at New York’s famed cabaret Upstairs at the Downstairs and went on to appear on Broadway in numerous productions including Joe Layton's Drat! The Cat!, Neil Simon's God’s Favorite directed by Michael Bennett, Burt Shevelove's So Long 174th Street, Gerald Freedman's The Robber Bridegroom, and Gene Saks' I Love My Wife. After teaching in New York at Juilliard and Circle in the Square, where he was musical director for eight years.

Moss moved to Los Angeles and founded The Larry Moss Studio, which has been in operation for 12 years. It was at that studio he directed and developed The Syringa Tree, which had its world premiere at Seattle’s ACT Rep.

He is also currently developing and directing Bo Eason's one-man show, Runt of the Litter, which will open in New York at Manhattan Class Company in January 2002.

Moss coached Helen Hunt in As Good as It Gets (Academy Award), Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry (Academy Award), Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile (Academy Award nomination), Hank Azaria in “Tuesday’s With Morrie,” (Emmy Award).

Moss and his partner, Michelle Danner, are the founding directors of the Edgemar Center for the Arts, a new two-theater multi-cultural complex encompassed in Frank Gehry's architectural landmark building, opening in Santa Monica at the end of 2002. In 1998, Moss directed the award-winning short film Dos Corazones. He is currently in pre-production to direct The Lily Field by Pamela Gien, to be produced by Matt Salinger. This season, Moss has coached Helen Hunt in Curse of the Jade Scorpion, Hillary Swank in The Affair of the Necklace and Jim Carrey in Frank Darabont’s The Majestic. In December The Syringa Tree will open in London at the National Theater and his new book on acting, The Intent to Live, will be published by Bantam Dell in 2002.
